Chapter 8 - THE CALENDAR HIDDEN UNDER LILY’S BED
The social worker asked Daniel to collect clothing for Lily.
Police accompanied him to the house.
Inside Lily’s bedroom, Daniel found a calendar beneath her mattress.
Small symbols appeared on different dates.
A bottle.
A moon.
A crying face.
Daniel photographed each page.
When Rachel asked Lily what they meant, she explained quietly.
A bottle meant she fed Noah alone.
A moon meant she stayed awake after midnight.
A crying face meant Claire or Diane became angry when she asked for help.
There were twenty-three bottles.
Nine moons.
Eleven crying faces.
Daniel felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath him.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Lily looked ashamed.
“Mom said you would have to stop working.”
“What else?”
“She said the company would lose money and Noah wouldn’t have a house.”
Claire had made Lily believe protecting the family required silence.
Diane added another fear.
“If you tell your father, your mother might disappear.”
Lily loved Claire.
Even after the kitchen.
Even after the lies.
Children could fear and love the same person.
Claire used both.
Police searched the house and found a second collection of videos on Chloe’s old tablet—Claire had filmed Lily completing household tasks and sent clips to a private parenting group.
The captions called Lily “my tiny helper.”
Viewers praised Claire for raising a responsible daughter.
The videos never showed the hours afterward.
One clip showed Lily holding Noah while Claire drank wine with friends.
Another showed Diane teaching Lily to prepare formula.
The comment beneath it read:
Start them young and motherhood becomes easier for everyone.
The videos established a pattern.
Claire had not made one desperate mistake.
She had turned Lily into unpaid childcare while presenting it publicly as character building.
Daniel contacted the school.
Lily’s teacher revealed she had fallen asleep during class several times.
She complained of back pain.
She once wrote, “My baby wakes up a lot,” before crossing out “my” and writing “our.”
The school had called Claire.
Claire said Lily stayed awake reading.
No one called Daniel.
The evidence grew heavier with every witness.
Then Rebecca found a clause inside the family trust.
If Claire lost custody due to neglect, she also lost access to the children’s education funds.
