Chapter 1 - THE LITTLE GIRL ON THE KITCHEN FLOOR
“Daddy… my back hurts.”
Daniel Harper stopped in the kitchen doorway.
Milk covered the white tile floor.
His seven-year-old daughter, Lily, knelt in the middle of it wearing a stained school shirt. She held a towel in one hand and balanced her six-month-old brother against her trembling hip with the other.
Noah screamed against her shoulder.
Lily’s eyes were swollen from crying.
Her bare feet slipped in the milk as she tried to stand.
Daniel dropped his travel bag.
He crossed the room and lifted Noah from her arms.
The baby’s diaper sagged. His bottle was empty. His cheeks were wet and hot.
Lily immediately bent toward the towel again.
Pain crossed her face.
Daniel caught her before she reached the floor.
“Stop, sweetheart.”
“I have to clean it before Mommy comes home.”
Daniel placed Lily carefully on a chair and held both children against him.
“Where is your mother?”
Lily lowered her eyes.
“She said not to call you.”
Daniel noticed the cracked security camera above the refrigerator.
Claire had messaged him earlier that evening.
The children are asleep. Mom is staying over. Enjoy your conference.
He opened the camera application.
The live feed was disabled.
But Daniel had installed encrypted cloud backup after a neighborhood burglary. Claire knew how to turn off the wall display.
She did not know the system continued uploading.
He opened the archive.
At 5:42 p.m., Claire appeared in a red dress.
Her mother, Diane, pushed Noah into Lily’s arms.
“You’re the big sister,” Diane said. “Stop acting helpless.”
Lily whispered, “He’s heavy.”
Claire checked her makeup in the camera’s reflection.
“Don’t call your father.”
A man entered through the back door.
Marcus Reed.
Daniel’s financial adviser.
Marcus wrapped one arm around Claire’s waist and kissed her.
Daniel stopped breathing.
The footage continued.
Claire laughed while Lily struggled to calm Noah behind her.
“By the time Daniel finds out,” Claire said, “the accounts will be empty.”
Daniel saved the file.
Then he saw the timestamp.
Lily had been carrying Noah for almost nine hours.
He called emergency services and his attorney.
