Chapter 4 - THE ACCOUNT MARCUS CONTROLLED
Marcus Reed had managed Daniel’s personal investments for six years.
They met through a hospital executive who described Marcus as discreet and brilliant.
Marcus helped Daniel restructure debt during the company’s fastest period of growth.
He managed retirement accounts, college funds, and the family’s emergency reserves.
Daniel trusted him.
Claire spent more time with him.
She attended financial-planning meetings Daniel often joined remotely.
She asked Marcus to explain tax structures over private dinners.
When Daniel noticed the frequency, Claire laughed.
“You hired him because he understands money.”
“I hired him to advise both of us.”
“And he does.”
Marcus had recently recommended creating a family liquidity account containing eight million dollars.
The money would supposedly protect Harper Medical Transport if Daniel became ill.
Daniel agreed to fund it.
He did not realize Marcus had altered the signature authority.
The final account listed Claire as a co-manager.
A second document allowed Marcus to transfer funds into “approved protective vehicles.”
Daniel’s electronic signature appeared beneath it.
He never signed that page.
Claire and Marcus used small transfers first.
Thirty thousand dollars.
Then eighty.
Then two hundred thousand.
They moved the money through consulting companies and luxury property deposits.
No amount was large enough to trigger Daniel’s attention individually.
Together, the transfers exceeded two million dollars.
Marcus then prepared the final move.
The remaining balance would be wired to an offshore account while Daniel attended the conference.
Claire planned to leave the children behind.
Her flight reservation listed only one adult.
Marcus had purchased a separate ticket.
Diane’s role was to keep Daniel from learning the truth until the funds cleared.
She would remain with Lily and Noah overnight.
But at six thirty, Diane received a call from a friend inviting her to a private casino party.
Instead of staying, she ordered Lily to care for Noah.
“You know where the bottles are,” Diane said.
“What if he doesn’t stop crying?”
“Then try harder.”
Claire watched from the doorway.
She did not object.
She only reminded Lily not to call Daniel.
The adults left together.
The camera recorded Claire and Marcus discussing the wire transfer as Lily rocked Noah near the refrigerator.
At 10:11 p.m., Marcus asked whether abandoning the children would make Claire look bad during a divorce.
Claire answered:

“Not if Daniel never knows when we left.”
