Chapter 14 - THE PLAN BEFORE THE BABY
Diane testified that Claire had considered leaving Daniel during pregnancy.
She was already involved with Marcus.
But divorce created a problem.
Daniel’s prenuptial agreement protected his company shares and inheritance.
Claire would receive a fair settlement.
Not the fortune she expected.
Marcus suggested waiting until Noah was born.
The children’s trusts would increase.
The family liquidity account would be funded.
Daniel would become busier.
Claire could move money gradually.
Diane approved.
“You deserve more after giving him children,” she told Claire.
The plan required Claire to appear overwhelmed.
She began documenting Daniel’s travel.
She canceled household support so she could later claim he abandoned her without help.
Then she pushed childcare onto Lily.
At first, Lily held Noah for twenty minutes.
Then an hour.
Then entire evenings.
Diane told prosecutors:
“Claire said it was good because Lily would become attached to the baby. Daniel would never suspect she wanted to leave them.”
The words made the courtroom investigator pause.
“You both knew she planned to abandon the children?”
Diane looked down.
“She said Daniel could afford help.”
“You made a seven-year-old provide that help.”
“I thought Claire would return sooner.”
The excuse failed.
Diane also admitted opening Lily’s secret account.
Marcus claimed it was temporary.
Diane believed Daniel would repay missing funds rather than expose his daughter to tax problems.
Again, they counted on his love as financial protection.
Claire had planned to file for divorce from abroad after the transfer cleared.
She would accuse Daniel of controlling behavior.
Marcus would release the false company records.
Diane would support Claire publicly while privately seeking money to remain silent.
Every adult had prepared an escape.
Only Lily and Noah had no choice.
The prosecution offered Diane reduced sentencing for full cooperation.
She accepted.
Daniel felt no relief.
A grandmother had exchanged loyalty for a better outcome only after a child was harmed.
Then Diane revealed the final document.
Claire had drafted a custody waiver for Daniel.
It claimed he agreed she could take Noah abroad while Lily remained with him.
His signature was forged.
Claire’s original plan had included taking the baby.
Marcus objected.
The argument was recorded.
Claire finally said:
May you like
“Then leave both. Lily already knows what to do.”
