Chapter 5 - THE NIGHT LILY STOPPED BEING A CHILD
Noah began crying before seven.
Lily warmed a bottle the way she had watched Daniel do it.
She tested one drop against her wrist.
The milk felt warm.
Noah drank half, then pushed it away.
Lily changed his diaper on the living-room rug because she could not lift him safely onto the changing table.
At eight, she tried calling Claire from the house phone.
No answer.
At nine, she called Diane.
Diane answered over loud music.
“Grandma, Noah won’t sleep.”
“Walk with him.”
“My arms hurt.”
“You are always complaining.”
“Can you come back?”
“I told you what to do.”
The call ended.
At ten, Noah cried harder.
Lily found Daniel’s private number missing from her desk.
She knew his phone number only partly.
She tried three combinations.
None connected.
At eleven, she sat on the kitchen floor with Noah against her chest.
She sang the alphabet song because it was the only long song she knew.
At midnight, she fell asleep sitting against a cabinet.
Noah’s cry woke her minutes later.
She tried to stand without using both hands.
Pain pulled through her lower back.
She bit her lip so she would not cry louder than the baby.
At two in the morning, Noah’s final clean bottle fell from the counter.
Milk spread across the floor.
Lily knelt to clean it while holding him.
That was how Daniel found her.
His Dallas meeting had ended early after the hospital contract was postponed.
He had tried calling Claire from the airport.
She claimed she was sleeping beside Noah and told him not to wake them.
Daniel decided to surprise the family.
When he opened the house door, no adult answered.
He followed the crying to the kitchen.
The image before him ended the marriage before he heard any explanation.
Lily looked up.
“Daddy… my back hurts.”
Daniel would later remember the words more clearly than Claire’s affair, the stolen money, or the courtroom arguments.
His daughter did not ask why he had left.
