Chapter 7 - The Envelope in Her Clutch
On the morning of the wedding, Savannah woke beneath a soft gray sky.
Eleanor dressed alone.
She pinned Thomas’s small silver brooch above her heart and placed the final-payment authorization inside her clutch.
Henry had advised her not to attend.
“At least let me come with you,” he said.
“No.”
“Grant may try to provoke you.”
“Then he will fail.”
Eleanor had spent the previous night reading every invoice, email, and trust statement Henry could gather.
They still did not understand the entire plan.
But they knew Grant had lied about the cost.
They knew her signature had been copied.
And they knew security had been instructed to record her if she became upset.
Henry prepared a formal notice suspending all unpaid wedding expenses if Eleanor was denied entry or publicly misrepresented as incompetent.
He also placed a second document inside an envelope.
“What is this?” she asked.
“Evidence that someone has been asking questions about changing control of the trust.”
“Grant?”
“I cannot prove that yet.”
Eleanor slid the envelope into her clutch.
She arrived at the Bellweather Hotel fifteen minutes before the ceremony.
Guests smiled when they recognized her.
Several thanked her for hosting such a beautiful event.
No one appeared to know she had been removed from it.
At the ballroom entrance, a hotel employee looked down at the tablet in her hand.
Then she looked helplessly toward Grant.
He came forward quickly.
Madison stood behind him in her wedding dress.
“Mom,” Grant said under his breath. “You shouldn’t have come.”
The ballroom doors opened.
Two hundred guests turned toward them.
Grant extended his arm across the entrance.
“Your name isn’t on the list.”
Eleanor finally understood that the humiliation had been planned.
So she opened her clutch.
