Chapter 13 - What Eleanor Refused to Destroy
While Henry drove to the hotel, Mr. Bell asked Eleanor what she wanted done about the guests.
The caterer could legally leave.
The staff could begin removing the tables.
The reception could end before it started.
Grant stood near the ballroom entrance, still insisting he would find the money.
Eleanor looked through the doors.
She saw elderly relatives who had traveled across the country.
She saw children waiting for dinner.
She saw hotel employees who had spent hours preparing the room.
None of them had betrayed her.
“I will authorize the food that has already been prepared,” she told Mr. Bell.
Grant looked up hopefully.
“But nothing else,” Eleanor continued.
“No orchestra. No whiskey lounge. No fireworks. No luxury upgrades.”
Mr. Bell nodded.
“The guests will receive dinner.”
“And the staff will receive every gratuity promised in the original agreement.”
Grant stepped forward.
“You’re willing to feed strangers but not support your own son?”
“I supported you for forty-four years.”
“Then finish what you started.”
“I will not pay for the weapon you built to use against me.”
The words struck harder than shouting could have.
Eleanor also requested that the unused flower arrangements be delivered to local hospitals and nursing homes after the guests departed.
Vivian scoffed.
“How noble.”
Eleanor met her gaze.
“Kindness is not weakness, Vivian. You confused the two.”
Madison stood near the altar, still wearing her ring.
The officiant quietly asked whether the ceremony should proceed.
Grant answered before she could.
“Yes.”
Madison stared at him.
“You think we can still get married?”
“This is temporary.”
“You tried to have your mother declared incompetent.”
“I tried to protect what belongs to our family.”
Eleanor’s eyes hardened.
“My money does not belong to you because you are my son.”
At that moment, Henry entered the ballroom carrying a sealed courthouse packet.
He was not alone.
