Chapter 11 - The Message Marked Monday
Rachel led Madison into the bridal suite.
Eleanor followed several minutes later with Henry on speakerphone.
Rachel opened an archived email Grant had sent from a second account.
The subject line contained only one word.
MONDAY.
The message instructed Rachel to preserve every recording of Eleanor at the wedding entrance.
It asked her to document any shouting, confusion, threats, or refusal to leave.
At the bottom was a sentence that made Madison’s stomach turn.
The footage may be required for the family matter discussed with counsel.
“What family matter?” Madison asked.
Rachel shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Eleanor lowered herself into a chair.
She remembered every strange comment Grant had made.
You’ve been sensitive lately.
You forget things.
You might embarrass yourself.
After the wedding, I’ll handle everything.
They had not been careless insults.
They had been part of a story he was building around her.
Henry’s voice came through the phone.
“Rachel, forward every email to my office. Do not delete anything.”
Grant entered without knocking.
Vivian followed.
Grant looked from the laptop to Eleanor.
“You’re destroying my wedding because you’re angry about a chair.”
Eleanor rose with difficulty.
“This was never about a chair.”
“You always use money to control me.”
“I gave you money because I loved you.”
“You gave me limits.”
“I gave you $120,000.”
“And kept the power to pull it away.”
Madison stepped between them.
“She pulled it away because you locked her outside.”
Grant turned toward his bride.
“We can still get married. The church portion is paid. We’ll handle the reception later.”
“Answer the question about Monday.”
His expression changed.
It was brief.
But everyone saw it.
Vivian spoke first.
“Madison, your future husband has been under unbearable pressure.”
“From what?”
Vivian glanced at Grant.
Neither answered.
Then Henry called Eleanor’s phone again.
His voice was different this time.
He had found a document filed under seal at the county courthouse.
