Chapter 12 - The Lie About Her Mind
Eleanor felt the room tilt.
Madison helped her sit down.
Grant immediately shook his head.
“Henry is trying to scare you.”
Henry remained on speakerphone.
“The filing references a medical evaluation signed by Dr. Alan Meeks.”
Eleanor frowned.
“I have never met anyone by that name.”
Grant’s face went rigid.
Vivian looked toward the door.
Madison noticed.
“Who is Dr. Meeks?”
Vivian folded her arms.
“He treated a friend of mine.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
Grant moved closer to Eleanor.
“Mom, you’ve been forgetting things. I was trying to help before someone took advantage of you.”
“You forged my signature.”
“I corrected paperwork you had already approved.”
“You removed me from your wedding.”
“You would have caused a scene.”
“Because you planned to humiliate me.”
Grant’s voice rose.
“Look at what you’re doing right now!”
No one spoke.
Eleanor had not shouted.
She had not threatened anyone.
She sat straight-backed in a silver dress, surrounded by people who had just watched Grant lose control.
Madison looked at him with growing horror.
“You needed her to look unstable.”
Grant laughed nervously.
“This is ridiculous.”
Henry interrupted.
“The doctor’s statement says Eleanor suffers from progressive cognitive decline and cannot manage complex financial decisions.”
“That is false,” Eleanor said.
“It also recommends that temporary financial authority be transferred to her closest living relative.”
Grant.
The word did not need to be spoken.
Madison turned toward Vivian.
“Did you know about this?”
Vivian’s lips pressed into a narrow line.
“I knew Grant was worried.”
“Did you know about the court filing?”
“I knew he was protecting the family.”
Madison removed her engagement ring.
She did not take it off yet.
She simply held it between two fingers and stared at the man she had planned to marry.
“Show me the petition.”
Henry hesitated.
“There is more than a medical statement.”
Grant lunged toward the phone.
Rachel stepped back with it.
