Chapter 10 - The Music Stopped
Inside the ballroom, the orchestra finished a song and did not begin another.
Several musicians quietly packed their instruments.
Hotel employees covered the champagne tower before it could be served.
The lighting behind the stage dimmed.
Grant stood near the altar, calling banks and demanding emergency credit increases.
Every request was denied.
His construction company had already exhausted its lines of credit.
Vivian cornered Mr. Bell.
“You cannot humiliate this family in front of two hundred people.”
Mr. Bell looked toward the guests.
“I am trying to avoid that.”
“Then continue the reception.”
“Who will pay for it?”
Vivian had no answer.
Madison returned carrying Eleanor’s folder.
Grant saw it immediately.
“You spoke to her.”
“Yes.”
“She’s manipulating you.”
Madison held up the forged contract.
“Is this her signature?”
Grant barely glanced at it.
“She forgets what she signs.”
Rachel approached with her laptop.
“No,” she said quietly. “She doesn’t.”
Grant turned on her.
“You work for us.”
“I work for the person paying the bill.”
Rachel opened an email chain.
Three weeks earlier, Grant had instructed her to remove Eleanor’s seat from the head table.
When Rachel objected, he claimed Eleanor had become confused and aggressive.
Then he added another instruction.
Keep a camera near the entrance. If she appears, make sure we capture the entire reaction.
Madison looked up slowly.
“You wanted her recorded.”
“For her safety.”
“You expected her to be upset.”
“I expected her to create chaos.”
“Because you planned to lock her outside.”
Grant’s jaw tightened.
Vivian stepped between them.
“This is not the time.”
Madison turned toward her mother.
“You knew.”
Vivian’s silence answered the question.
Around them, guests were no longer pretending not to listen.
Grant reached for Madison’s arm.
