Chapter 16 - The Secret Thomas Left Behind
Two months before Thomas died, he had found irregular transfers inside Whitmore Coastal Development.
Grant called them temporary loans.
Thomas called them theft.
He quietly repaid the missing funds to protect the company and its employees.
Then he amended the family trust.
Grant could receive a salary and inheritance income.
But he could never control the principal without Eleanor’s written approval and an independent audit.
Thomas told Eleanor only that the new rules would protect the family.
He did not reveal the full reason until the final week of his life.
“He is our son,” Thomas had whispered from his hospital bed. “Love him, but don’t give him the power to destroy himself.”
Eleanor had obeyed.
She paid Grant’s debts once.
She helped him buy a home.
She placed him in a respected company position.
But she never gave him unrestricted control.
Grant interpreted every boundary as rejection.
After Thomas’s death, his spending grew.
Private investments failed.
His company division lost money.
Then he met Vivian.
Vivian convinced him that appearance could restore confidence.
A spectacular wedding would bring investors, lenders, and influential guests into one room.
More importantly, marriage would make Grant look stable and responsible before the guardianship hearing.
Madison had never been told any of that.
She had been part of the presentation.
Like the orchids.
Like the orchestra.
Like Eleanor’s planned breakdown at the door.
Madison looked at the engagement ring on the table.
“You didn’t want a wife.”
Grant reached for her.
“That’s not true.”
“You wanted a witness who could say you were a devoted son.”
“I love you.”
“You lied to me about everything that mattered.”
Vivian stepped forward.
“Madison, think carefully. Walking away now will ruin your reputation.”
Madison looked at her mother.
“You helped a man steal from an elderly woman because you wanted a ballroom.”
Vivian’s face hardened.
“I wanted you to have security.”
“No. You wanted people to envy you.”
Madison turned to the officiant.
