Chapter 14 - The Signature of a Doctor
Henry asked to speak privately.
Grant refused.
“This is my wedding.”
Madison looked around the ballroom.
“No, Grant. It isn’t.”
The guests fell silent again.
Henry opened the courthouse packet.
The emergency guardianship petition had been prepared three weeks earlier.
Attached to it was a medical letter bearing Dr. Alan Meeks’s signature.
The letter described Eleanor as forgetful, paranoid, financially reckless, and prone to emotional outbursts.
It claimed the doctor had evaluated her twice.
Eleanor had never been evaluated by him.
The financial investigator placed a phone on the table and called Dr. Meeks in front of everyone involved.
The doctor answered from Atlanta.
He confirmed that he knew Vivian socially.
He also confirmed that he had never treated Eleanor.
“That is not my letter,” he said. “And that is not my signature.”
Vivian backed toward the wall.
Madison stared at her mother.
“You gave them his name.”
Vivian shook her head.
“Grant handled the documents.”
Grant pointed at Henry.
“This is a setup.”
Henry turned to the next attachment.
It contained an affidavit from Grant.
He claimed his mother had become incapable of managing the Whitmore Family Trust.
He claimed she was being manipulated by outsiders.
He claimed immediate control was needed to prevent catastrophic financial loss.
The investigator looked at him.
“What catastrophic loss?”
Grant said nothing.
Henry removed one final set of records.
Over the previous eighteen months, Grant had pledged company assets as collateral for private loans.
He had also transferred money from a subsidiary into accounts controlled by him.
The total exposure was $1.8 million.
If Eleanor remained in control of the trust, the missing money would be discovered during the annual review.
If Grant became her guardian, he could delay the review and refinance the debt using trust property.
Madison finally pulled off her ring.
