Chapter 6 - The First Erasure
Five days before the wedding, Rachel called Eleanor to confirm transportation.
The planner sounded nervous.
“Mrs. Whitmore, are you still planning to attend?”
Eleanor frowned.
“Of course.”
There was a pause.
“I was told your health might prevent it.”
“My health?”
Rachel lowered her voice.
“Grant requested special security instructions.”
Eleanor sat down slowly.
“What instructions?”
Rachel refused to explain over the phone.
But an hour later, Eleanor received an email that Rachel had clearly forwarded by mistake.
If Mrs. Whitmore arrives without supervision, do not allow her into the ballroom. Record any emotional disturbance. Contact Grant before contacting medical personnel.
The message had been sent from Grant’s personal email address at 2:14 in the morning.
Eleanor read it three times.
Then she called him.
Grant sounded almost amused.
“The hotel misunderstood.”
“You told them to record me.”
“I told them to protect you.”
“From what?”
“From embarrassing yourself.”
The words settled between them.
Grant sighed.
“Mom, you’ve been confused about the bills. You’ve accused people. Maybe sitting this one out would be best.”
Eleanor gripped the phone.
“This wedding is being paid for with my money.”
“Our family’s money.”
“No. The trust is mine while I am alive.”
His voice turned cold.
“You always have to remind me of that.”
He ended the call.
Eleanor immediately contacted Henry.
He listened without interrupting.
Then he asked her to forward the email and not speak to Grant again without a witness.
“Henry, what is happening?”
“I don’t know yet.”
But Henry did know one thing.
Someone from Grant’s legal office had recently requested copies of Eleanor’s medical records, trust documents, and power-of-attorney history.
