Chapter 9 - THE FILE MARKED NOW

Nora spent the night preparing the release.

The file contained the bridal-suite footage.

The unauthorized transfers.

The forged signature.

The hidden continuity declaration.

Vivian’s recorded demand.

But Nora advised against releasing the sealed property documents yet.

“We still don’t know exactly what Claire owned,” she said. “The trustee arrives tomorrow morning.”

Maya nodded.

“Release only what we can prove.”

They created separate delivery lists.

The wedding guests would receive the evidence of sabotage and coercion.

The Whitmore board, lenders, and financial investigators would receive the banking records.

The police would receive the recordings and forged documents.

Maya’s message to Nora would contain one word.

Now.

Daniel found Maya sitting alone before sunrise, sewing Claire’s torn lace into the inside of the ruined dress.

“You don’t have to do this,” he said.

“I know.”

“People will stare.”

“That’s what Vivian wants.”

“Then why give it to her?”

“Because she thinks they’ll be staring at my shame.”

Maya looked up.

“They’re going to be looking at her evidence.”

Daniel sat beside her.

“I spent years wishing I had fought harder when the Whitmores erased your mother.”

“You were raising me.”

“I was also afraid. They had money, attorneys, and a name people respected.”

Maya threaded the final stitch.

“They still think their name is stronger than the truth.”

At ten that morning, the trustee arrived with Claire’s sealed envelope and an original ownership agreement.

Nora read the first pages and went silent.

“What is it?” Maya asked.

Nora looked toward Daniel.

“The Whitmores didn’t merely borrow money from Claire.”

She turned another page.

“Your mother obtained controlling rights over Whitmore House if the family committed fraud involving the property.”

Maya stared at her.

“Controlling rights?”

“Fifty-one percent.”

The biggest document was real.

But Maya chose not to release it yet.

First, she wanted Ethan and Vivian to act in front of witnesses.

👉 Maya now knew she could legally control Whitmore House, but the ownership clause would activate only after the fraud was formally proven.
