Chapter 11 - WHY ETHAN CHOSE HER

“You’re destroying everything your mother built,” Ethan hissed.

Maya went still.

Most guests were still reading the released files.

Only those nearest the altar heard him.

“What did you say?”

Ethan realized his mistake.

Vivian stepped forward.

“He’s emotional.”

Maya did not look away from Ethan.

“You knew my mother had an interest in Whitmore House.”

“It was a dead claim.”

“You knew.”

Vivian ordered security to remove Maya.

The guards did not move.

The head of security had already received instructions from the property trustee.

Until ownership was clarified, Vivian no longer had authority to direct them.

Nora walked down the aisle carrying the original agreement.

“Claire Bennett’s claim was never dead.”

Vivian’s face tightened.

“That contract is unenforceable.”

“You’ve spent twenty-four years behaving as if it is enforceable.”

Nora held up the records of the secret transfers.

“You created shell companies to drain money from Maya’s business because you needed her assets to hide fraud connected to this estate.”

Guests began leaving their seats to hear more clearly.

Ethan lowered his voice.

“Maya, come upstairs. We can fix this.”

“Did you know before you met me?”

He said nothing.

“That fundraiser,” Maya continued. “You approached me because of my name.”

“I fell in love with you.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Vivian snapped, “Do not answer her.”

The command answered for him.

Maya removed the engagement ring and placed it on top of the unsigned continuity declaration.

Ethan’s composure cracked.

“Without your signature, the estate could collapse.”

“You should have told me the truth.”

“You would have walked away.”

“Yes.”

“That’s why we couldn’t tell you.”

Maya felt the final piece fall into place.

Ethan had not accidentally become part of his mother’s scheme.

The scheme had introduced them.

Their engagement, the pressure, and the wedding had all been designed around Claire’s ownership rights.

👉 Maya now knew the courtship began as a business strategy, but investigators still had to determine whether Ethan ever loved her—or only performed love to gain her signature.
