Chapter 7 - THE BLACK STAIN
The garment bag was still locked inside the bridal closet.
Maya opened it with the wedding planner beside her.
The chemical smell hit them first.
Then they saw the dress.
Black industrial dye had been poured down the front of the silk.
The stain reached from the bodice to the train.
The zipper had been cut.
Several seams had been opened with a blade.
Claire’s lace had been torn from inside the gown.
The wedding planner covered her mouth.
“Oh, my God.”
Maya did not scream.
She took photographs from every angle.
Then she called Nora.
“Don’t tell anyone we found it.”
“Maya, the wedding is tomorrow.”
“I know.”
“You’re not still marrying him.”
“No.”
Maya looked at the ruined gown.
“But Vivian thinks I am.”
Security records showed that Vivian’s master key entered the bridal suite at 2:13 a.m.
The hallway camera captured her carrying the bottle.
A second camera recorded her leaving eighteen minutes later without it.
But Maya wanted more than proof of sabotage.
She needed to know why Vivian believed destroying the dress would help.
Nora searched the wedding contracts.
A new document had been added to the ceremony packet.
It stated that immediately after the vows, Maya and Ethan would sign a “family continuity declaration.”
The wording looked ceremonial.
Legally, it activated portions of the marital asset agreement Maya had rejected.
“They planned to put it in front of you after the ceremony,” Nora said. “With two hundred guests watching.”
Vivian expected Maya to be emotionally shattered.
She would offer a replacement gown only if Maya cooperated.
If Maya refused, Vivian would send her down the aisle humiliated and then blame the damage on Maya’s carelessness.
Maya found the torn strip of Claire’s lace on the closet floor.
She picked it up carefully.
“She thinks this dress is the thing I’m afraid to lose.”
“What are you going to do?”
“I’m going to let her believe she succeeded.”
Nora stared at her.
“You’re walking down the aisle in that?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”

“Because I want every witness looking directly at her when the truth arrives.”
