Chapter 13 - THE EMPLOYEE WHO KEPT COPIES
The former employee was Helen Price, Vivian’s executive assistant for seventeen years.
She had resigned shortly after Ethan and Maya became engaged.
Helen contacted Nora after seeing the wedding footage.
“I kept records because I knew one day Vivian would blame someone else,” she said.
Helen carried a box of printed emails and meeting notes.
The earliest plan involved purchasing Maya’s architecture firm through a shell corporation.
When that failed, Vivian proposed creating a personal relationship.
Ethan initially resisted.
Not because he thought it was wrong.
Because he considered Maya socially unsuitable.
In one email, he wrote:
She’s talented, but her father is a contractor. The family will question it.
Vivian replied:
The family will accept anyone who saves the estate.
Weeks later, Ethan began researching Maya’s interests.
Historic preservation.
Children’s charities.
Her mother’s work.
He attended the hospital fundraiser because he knew Maya would be there.
He repeated details from her interviews to make their conversation feel natural.
Every thoughtful coincidence Maya remembered had been prepared.
But Helen also provided later messages.
Six months into the relationship, Ethan told Vivian he wanted to abandon the plan.
He wrote:
She trusts me. This has gone too far.
Vivian responded:
You are not sacrificing Whitmore House because you developed feelings.
Maya read the message several times.
Ethan may have eventually loved her.
But when forced to choose between love and control, he chose control.
He allowed the forged transfers.
He pressured her to sign.
He stood silently while Vivian used the ruined dress as leverage.
Helen handed Nora one final recording.
It came from a meeting held the week before the wedding.
Ethan told Vivian he would not physically force Maya.
Vivian replied, “You won’t need to. Shame is more effective.”
Ethan did not disagree.
Instead, he asked what would happen if Maya still refused.
Vivian answered:

Then we declare her unstable and challenge her ability to control the trust.
