Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN IN THE OLD PHOTOGRAPH
Nora advised Maya to postpone the wedding.
Maya resisted.
She wanted proof that Ethan was involved.
“An account tied to his mother doesn’t prove he knew,” she said.
“It proves someone close to him had access to your financial records.”
Maya thought about the nights Ethan worked from her home office while she slept.
She remembered giving him the password to her laptop because he wanted to print a restaurant proposal.
She changed every password.
Then she began examining old Whitmore property files.
As a restoration architect, Maya had been invited to advise on repairs to Whitmore House shortly after the engagement.
The family claimed the estate had belonged to the Whitmores for five generations.
But while reviewing archived renovation photographs, Maya found a woman standing beside the mansion’s damaged east wing.
The photograph was dated twenty-four years earlier.
The woman was Maya’s mother.
Claire Bennett.
Maya stared at the image.
Her mother wore work boots and held a roll of architectural plans.
Standing beside her was Vivian.
Daniel went silent when Maya showed him the photograph.
“You knew Mom worked at Whitmore House?”
“She consulted on the restoration.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because after Claire died, the Whitmores erased her from the project.”
“What do you mean, erased?”
Daniel opened an old metal box he had kept locked since Maya’s childhood.
Inside were letters, contracts, and photographs.
Claire had not merely advised the Whitmores.
She had financed part of the restoration after a fire nearly destroyed the estate.
The Whitmores had been close to bankruptcy.
Claire used money inherited from her grandmother to save the house and preserve the jobs of dozens of employees.
In exchange, she received a secured ownership interest.
Daniel placed one sealed envelope on the table.
“Your mother made me promise not to open this unless the Whitmores tried to take something from you.”
The envelope was addressed to Maya.
But a legal seal prevented them from opening it without the trustee present.
