Chapter 8 - THE TEST
Maya called Ethan that afternoon.
“My dress has been damaged.”
He paused.
“How badly?”
She noticed what he did not ask.
He did not ask how it happened.
He did not ask whether she was hurt.
“Badly enough that I may not be able to wear it.”
“My mother can arrange another dress.”
“So quickly?”
“She has connections.”
Maya closed her eyes.
“You don’t sound surprised.”
“I’m trying to stay calm.”
“What if I cancel the wedding?”
His voice hardened.
“You can’t.”
“I can.”
“Guests have traveled. Contracts have been signed. The company has made financial commitments based on tomorrow.”
“What company commitments?”
Silence.
Then Ethan said, “Come to Whitmore House. We’ll handle this privately.”
Maya agreed but brought Nora’s investigator.
A small recording device was hidden inside her purse.
Vivian met Maya in the library.
A replacement gown hung near the fireplace.
It was expensive, dramatic, and completely different from the dress Maya chose.
Beside it rested the family continuity declaration.
Vivian did not pretend innocence.
“Your original gown is unfortunate,” she said.
“Unfortunate?”
“Accidents happen.”
“Someone poured dye on it.”
“You cannot prove who.”
Maya looked at the replacement dress.
“What do you want?”
“Sign the continuity declaration. Wear this gown. Walk into that chapel looking worthy of the Whitmore name.”
“And if I refuse?”
Vivian approached her.
“Then you walk in wearing your shame.”
Ethan stood near the window.
He said nothing.
Maya turned toward him.
“Did you know?”
He avoided her eyes.
“My mother is trying to save this wedding.”
“She destroyed my dress.”
“She created a solution.”
That was the moment Maya stopped wondering whether Ethan would protect her.
He had made his choice.
Maya picked up the replacement gown.
Vivian smiled.
Then Maya placed it back down.
