Chapter 2 - THE FAMILY MAYA WANTED TO BELONG TO
Eleven months earlier, Ethan proposed to Maya in the rose garden behind Whitmore House.
The estate was famous throughout Virginia.
Its white columns appeared in magazines.
Its ballroom hosted charity galas, political dinners, and weddings that cost more than many families earned in a year.
Ethan knelt beneath an arch of winter roses.
“My family has spent generations protecting this place,” he said. “I want you to become part of that history.”
Maya believed him.
She was thirty-one, a restoration architect who cared more about saving old buildings than attending society parties.
Her father, Daniel, owned a small construction firm. He had raised Maya alone after her mother, Claire, died from an illness when Maya was thirteen.
The Bennetts were comfortable, but they were not part of the Whitmores’ world.
Vivian made that difference clear during the engagement dinner.
She examined Maya’s simple gold earrings.
“You’ll need guidance before appearing at Whitmore events.”
Maya smiled politely.
“I’m not planning to become someone else.”
“A bride always changes.”
Ethan squeezed Maya’s hand beneath the table.
“Mom means well.”
It became his favorite sentence.
When Vivian criticized Maya’s clothes, she meant well.
When she replaced Maya’s wedding planner without asking, she meant well.
When she removed Daniel’s relatives from the guest list because they were “too casual,” she meant well.
Ethan always apologized afterward.
But he never reversed his mother’s decisions.
Daniel noticed.
“One day,” he told Maya, “you may have to decide whether Ethan is protecting you or simply calming you down so you’ll accept what hurts.”
Maya defended her fiancé.
She said Ethan was trapped between two strong women.
She did not yet understand that Ethan was not trapped.
He was waiting.
