Chapter 12 - THE MAN BEHIND THE PROPOSAL

Police arrived before the last guests left the chapel.

Vivian insisted that the dress damage was a family misunderstanding.

The bridal-suite footage said otherwise.

She was questioned but not immediately arrested.

Ethan claimed he knew nothing about the dye.

He admitted knowing about Claire’s old agreement but said he believed the claim had expired.

Maya returned to her father’s house.

For the first time in months, she turned off her phone and slept without worrying whether Ethan was angry.

The next morning, she met Nora and the trustee.

Claire’s letter explained everything.

Years earlier, Whitmore House had suffered a devastating electrical fire.

Vivian’s husband had hidden the family’s financial problems.

Insurance covered only part of the restoration.

Claire invested nearly all of her inheritance to save the estate.

She also personally designed the restoration plan.

In exchange, she received 40 percent ownership immediately and an additional 11 percent if the Whitmores ever committed fraud involving the estate or attempted to conceal her interest.

After Claire became ill, Vivian pressured her to surrender the agreement.

Claire refused.

Following her death, the Whitmores removed her name from the restoration history and told the public the family had financed everything.

Daniel did not challenge them because he lacked the resources for a prolonged legal fight.

Claire’s final letter warned Maya:

A beautiful house can hide rot behind its walls. So can a beautiful family.

Do not preserve either one by sacrificing yourself.

Bank investigators then traced the stolen $240,000.

The money had paid overdue property taxes, private loans, and wedding expenses.

The Whitmores had used Maya’s own money to finance the ceremony intended to take her rights.

Then Nora found Ethan’s private calendar.

His first meeting about Maya occurred three months before the fundraiser where they supposedly met by chance.

The calendar entry read:

Bennett heir—initial contact.

👉 Ethan had planned the first meeting, yet one former Whitmore employee claimed the original strategy had been even colder than Maya imagined.
