Maya called the bank.
The representative confirmed that the transfer had come from a reserve account connected to her architecture firm.
The authorization form contained her name, business information, and electronic signature.
Maya requested a copy.
The signature was convincing.
But the date revealed the truth.
The form had been signed while Maya was presenting at a preservation conference in Boston.
She had been onstage when the document was submitted.
Nora immediately froze the account and began tracing the transaction.
Whitmore Restoration Services sounded legitimate.
It was not.
The company had been created only four months earlier.
Its registered address was a private mailbox.
The owner was a trust controlled by Vivian.
When Maya confronted Ethan, he acted confused.
“My mother handles dozens of companies.”
“Money was taken from my business.”
“It could be an accounting error.”
“Someone copied my signature.”
“Then Nora should fix it quietly.”
Maya studied him.
“Why quietly?”
“Because accusations can damage my family.”
“My money was stolen.”
“And it will be returned.”
Ethan reached for her hands.
“We’re getting married. We shouldn’t be fighting over paperwork.”
Maya pulled away.
That night, the money reappeared in her account.
No explanation.
No apology.
Vivian called the next morning.
“I understand you panicked over a bookkeeping mistake.”
“Someone forged my signature.”
“You should be careful using words like forged.”
“I’m using the correct word.”
Vivian’s voice became softer.
That frightened Maya more than shouting would have.
“You are entering a family that has survived wars, scandals, and financial collapses. Women who join this family learn discretion.”
“I’m not joining a secret society.”
“You’re joining something larger than yourself.”
After the call, Nora discovered that the unauthorized transfer was not the first.
Smaller amounts had been moving for nearly seven months.
Together, they totaled more than $240,000.
