Claire’s forensic review identified eighty-seven grants that never reached their intended recipients.
Some were small.
Five thousand dollars for temporary housing.
Twelve thousand for travel.
Twenty thousand for experimental medication.
Together, they exceeded nine million dollars.
Families had been told funding was unavailable.
The foundation’s reports still counted the grants as completed.
Evelyn used photographs from earlier charity events to support the false claims.
One case involved a girl named Sophie Alvarez.
The foundation announced it had paid for Sophie’s surgery.
The hospital had never received the money.
Her parents borrowed against their home.
Sophie survived.
The family lost the house.
Claire met Sophie’s mother.
“I wrote Evelyn three times,” Mrs. Alvarez said. “Her office sent me a photograph of the gala where they announced our grant.”
“They used your daughter’s name?”
“To raise more money.”
That meeting changed the investigation for Daniel.
Until then, part of him still viewed the fraud as a family financial crisis.
An ugly method of replacing funds Evelyn believed she could repay.
Sophie’s case removed that excuse.
His mother knew people were being harmed.
She continued.
Daniel asked the independent foundation board to suspend Evelyn.
Several trustees refused.
They had social and business connections to her.
One said an investigation before the wedding would create unnecessary scandal.
Claire understood the language.

The children could wait.
Miriam advised Claire to resign and submit the files to federal investigators.

Fortunately, she had encrypted backups.
The deletion attempt came from Evelyn’s private tablet.
That gave them direct digital evidence.
But they still needed the device and biometric log preserved before Evelyn could claim the tablet had been stolen.
The wedding week created access.
Evelyn would be in the chapel complex.
Her devices would connect to the venue’s secure network.
Investigators obtained a preservation order timed for the morning of the ceremony.
Claire did not intend to announce the case publicly.
She planned to let officers serve the warrant before guests entered.
Evelyn discovered enough of the plan to understand Claire was carrying evidence into the chapel.
