Chapter 12 - The Engagement Without a Date
Claire kept the engagement ring in a drawer.
She did not return it.
She also did not wear it.
Daniel asked no questions about a new ceremony.
He focused on the investigation, therapy and restoring the foundation.
The independent board invited Claire to become permanent chief financial officer.
She declined.
“I was hired to find the problem. Giving me control immediately would look like the story Evelyn already created.”
Instead, Claire accepted a temporary advisory role under court supervision.
Every decision required independent approval.
Daniel respected the boundary.
He sold his interest in two luxury properties Evelyn had transferred to him years earlier.
The proceeds returned to the foundation.
He did not know whether the properties had been purchased with stolen money.
That uncertainty was enough.
Some relatives accused him of surrendering his inheritance to impress Claire.
Daniel stopped defending himself at family dinners.
He no longer attended them.
Claire watched his choices over months.
He reviewed documents before signing.
Asked independent questions.
Accepted criticism without calling it betrayal.
One evening, he visited Claire’s apartment carrying the sealed wedding-vow envelope.
“I found this in my suit pocket.”
Claire looked at it.
“Did you read yours?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know whether the man who wrote them understood marriage.”
Claire appreciated the honesty.
Daniel sat across from her.
“I’m afraid you will always see my mother when you look at me.”
“Sometimes I do.”
He absorbed the answer.
Claire continued.
“I’m also afraid you will look at me one day and see the person who sent her to prison.”
“You preserved evidence.”
“That is not the same as how grief feels.”
“No.”
He did not promise resentment would never exist.
Instead, he said, “If it comes, I will tell you before I use it against you.”
The answer mattered more than certainty.
Claire put the ring on again two weeks later.
Still, they did not choose a date.
Marriage would not become a reward for surviving scandal.
It had to become a decision made after both could choose freely again.
Meanwhile, the foundation began contacting every family denied promised support.
