Chapter 5 - The Proposal Evelyn Tried to Stop
Daniel proposed inside the hospital wing his father had helped fund.
Claire had spent the afternoon verifying grants for three children awaiting surgery.
He arrived after visiting hours carrying no photographer and no family ring.
Only a simple gold band that had belonged to Claire’s grandmother.
He had asked Claire’s sister for it.
“I don’t want to offer you something from the Mercer vault,” he said. “I want to offer you something that already belongs to your life.”
Claire said yes.
Evelyn learned the next morning.
She refused to congratulate them.
Instead, she asked Daniel to sign a new family trust agreement.
It required his future spouse to waive access to historical foundation records and Mercer estate documents.
Daniel rejected it.
“This is not a prenup. It is a silence agreement.”
“It protects your father’s legacy.”
“My father was investigating you.”
Evelyn slapped him.
It was the first time she had struck her adult son.
Then she cried.
She claimed grief had overwhelmed her.
Daniel left the estate and moved into Claire’s apartment.
That decision shifted the family balance.
Evelyn no longer controlled his home, schedule or mail.
Claire and Daniel continued the investigation.
The wedding was planned for the following spring.
Claire initially wanted a small ceremony.
Evelyn insisted on the Mercer chapel.
“A private wedding will look like shame,” she said.
Claire recognized the trap.
Evelyn cared less about marriage than optics.
If the wedding occurred inside the family chapel with major donors, trustees and business partners present, Evelyn could display unity and silence rumors about the audit.
Claire agreed for a different reason.
The guest list would gather almost every relevant witness in one place.
Daniel knew part of the plan.
Not all of it.
Claire and Miriam had discovered that several shell-company documents were stored on the foundation’s private server.
Access required Evelyn’s biometric authorization.
They needed proof linking her personally to the transfers.
A hidden camera inside the bridal suite was intended only to protect the gown, jewelry and legal files from tampering.
