Chapter 4 - The Last Week of Thomas Mercer
Thomas Mercer’s death had been attributed to a heart attack.
He was sixty-two.
Healthy enough to swim every morning.
Daniel remembered the final week clearly.
His father appeared frightened.
He canceled meetings.
He moved files out of the estate.
Then he collapsed after dinner inside his private study.
Evelyn said he had been under pressure.
No autopsy was performed because the family doctor confirmed natural causes.
Claire found something unusual in the foundation archive.
Thomas had scheduled an emergency board meeting for the day after his death.
The agenda referenced unauthorized transfers, forged trustee approvals and removal of the chairwoman.
Evelyn was the chairwoman.
The meeting never occurred.
The supporting documents disappeared.
Only the calendar entry remained.
Claire showed Daniel.
He read it in silence.
“You think my mother killed him?”
“I said nothing like that.”
“You think his death was connected.”
“I think he discovered the same accounts I did.”
Daniel closed the laptop.
For two days, he avoided Claire.
The implication was too painful.
Then he returned carrying a key.
It opened an old bank box Thomas had maintained separately from the family.
Inside were handwritten notes.
Thomas had traced Silver Laurel.
He believed Evelyn was moving foundation funds to cover losses in her private investments.
He also discovered she had forged his signature.
His last entry read:
Confront after confirming Daniel is not involved.
Daniel stared at the sentence.
“My father suspected me.”
“He was trying to protect you if you were innocent.”
A second envelope contained laboratory results.
Thomas had sent a sample of his evening medication for testing.
The pills did not match his prescription.
The report found a stronger blood-pressure drug that could cause collapse if taken at the wrong dosage.
No note explained who changed the medication.
Daniel wanted police involved immediately.
Claire stopped him.
“This is not enough to accuse anyone of murder.”
“It is enough to investigate.”
“Yes.”
They contacted Miriam Cole, an attorney experienced in financial crime, and Detective Marcus Hale, who agreed to reopen questions surrounding Thomas’s death if the fraud evidence established motive.
Evelyn learned someone had accessed the bank box.
From that point forward, her hostility toward Claire became open.
She did not merely want Claire away from Daniel.
