Chapter 3 - The Woman Evelyn Couldn’t Impress
Evelyn invited Claire to lunch inside the Mercer estate.
She selected the formal dining room, though only two places were set.
Portraits of Daniel’s ancestors covered the walls.
The message was clear.
Claire was temporary.
The Mercers were permanent.
Evelyn poured tea.
“Daniel admires you.”
“I admire him.”
“That was not my concern.”
Claire waited.
Evelyn continued.
“Our family has survived public scandals, business failures and political enemies. We do not survive outsiders misunderstanding private matters.”
“The foundation is not private.”
“It carries our name.”
“It accepts public donations.”
Evelyn’s smile tightened.
“You are very literal.”
“I’m an auditor.”
“You are a contractor.”
“I am also legally required to report fraud.”
Evelyn placed the teapot down.
“No one is asking you to conceal fraud.”
“Good.”
“We are asking you to understand context.”
“What context makes a dead man’s forged signature acceptable?”
For one second, Evelyn’s face became completely empty.
Then she smiled again.
“My late husband authorized many arrangements before his death.”
“Not payments created five years afterward.”
“You have not been part of this family long enough to interpret its history.”
“I don’t need family history to read a bank statement.”
The lunch ended shortly afterward.
That evening, Daniel apologized for his mother.
“She thinks anyone questioning her is trying to destroy what Dad built.”
“What did your father build?”
“The foundation. Most of the family companies. This house.”
“And what did she build?”
Daniel considered the question.
“The public image.”
Claire nodded.
That was Evelyn’s real empire.
Not the foundation.
Not the house.
The belief that she was a grieving widow protecting a noble legacy.
Claire’s audit threatened that image.
Her relationship with Daniel threatened it further.
Evelyn tolerated employees.
Advisers.
Guests.
She did not tolerate someone Daniel might trust more than her.
Several weeks later, Daniel invited Claire to dinner.
Then another.
Their relationship grew without secrecy.
He told Evelyn they were dating.
She reacted calmly.
Too calmly.
The following morning, Claire’s audit access was suspended.
The foundation accused her of mishandling confidential files.
Daniel restored it through a board vote.
