Chapter 15 - Daniel Chose the Truth Again
Daniel entered the witness box carrying no notes.
Evelyn looked at him for the first time during the trial.
Her expression softened.
“My son,” she whispered.
The judge instructed her to remain silent.
Daniel described his childhood.
His mother’s control.
His father’s quiet resistance.
The foundation’s public work.
The trust he placed in Evelyn after Thomas died.
Then he described Claire’s audit.
“When did you first believe your mother committed fraud?” the prosecutor asked.
“When I saw my father’s signature on a document created after his death.”
“Did Claire pressure you to accuse her?”
“No.”
“Did Claire ask you to end contact with your mother?”
“No.”
“Did she ask you to give her the estate keys?”
“No.”
“Why did you do it?”
“Because the house contained evidence, and my mother still had access.”
Evelyn’s attorney approached.
“Mr. Mercer, did Claire benefit professionally from this investigation?”
“Yes.”
“Did she receive public attention?”
“Yes.”
“Did she become involved in foundation restructuring?”
“Temporarily.”
“So she gained influence.”
Daniel answered calmly.
“She repeatedly refused permanent control.”
The attorney changed direction.
“Your mother was grieving.”
“For twelve years?”
“Your father’s death altered her.”
“She forged his signature before he died.”
“Do you love your mother?”
Daniel stopped.
The room waited.
“Yes.”
Evelyn began crying.
The attorney turned toward the jury.
“Yet you helped send her to prison.”
Daniel looked at his mother.
“I helped preserve evidence of what she chose.”
“Would you have done that without Claire?”
“I hope so.”
“That was not my question.”
Daniel’s voice weakened but did not break.
“No. I might not have asked the right questions without Claire.”
The attorney smiled.
“So she influenced you.”
“She taught me influence is not the same as control.”
Daniel explained the difference.
Claire showed him records.
Evelyn demanded loyalty.
Claire accepted delays.
Evelyn punished refusal.
Claire asked him to think.
Evelyn told him what family required.
His testimony ended the claim that Claire had manipulated him.
More importantly, it showed Daniel understood his own responsibility.
He had trusted convenience.
Ignored warning signs.
Benefited from a family name built partly through stolen money.
