Detective Marcus obtained a warrant for the Mercer estate.
Inside Evelyn’s locked study, investigators found an old medication organizer belonging to Thomas.
The labels did not match the pills inside.
A private pharmacy record showed Evelyn had collected a replacement prescription two days before his death.
The prescription was stronger than Thomas’s doctor ordered.
Evelyn claimed the pharmacy made a mistake.
The pharmacist remembered her.
“She said her husband’s dosage had changed.”
No doctor had authorized the change.
Investigators also found an email Thomas sent Evelyn hours before he collapsed.
I know about Silver Laurel. We speak tonight. Daniel stays out of this until I know the truth.
Evelyn replied:
You will not destroy what I built because you suddenly want to play the righteous man.
That evening, Thomas consumed wine and took his medication.
He collapsed less than an hour later.
Evelyn called the family doctor instead of emergency services.
The delay lasted twenty-three minutes.
The doctor later said Evelyn told him Thomas had a terminal heart condition.
He did not.
The evidence still did not prove intentional murder.
It established reckless medication interference and delayed emergency care.
A medical expert concluded Thomas might have survived with prompt treatment.
Daniel listened to the findings inside Marcus’s office.
“My mother watched him die.”
Marcus answered carefully.
“We can prove she changed the medication and delayed help. Intent will be decided by prosecutors.”
Daniel looked toward Claire.
She did not know whether to touch him.
He reached for her first.
Claire held his hand.
Not because the investigation had erased their difficulties.
Because grief required no perfect resolution.

A house manager remembered Evelyn burning papers the morning after Thomas’s death.
A driver recalled taking her to Silver Laurel’s bank.
The family doctor surrendered notes showing she pressured him not to request an autopsy.

Assault.
Reckless endangerment related to Thomas’s death.
Evelyn continued insisting the case was Claire’s revenge for the gown.
