Chapter 1 - You Wanted Witnesses

“Know your place.”
Evelyn Mercer whispered the words as Claire entered the chapel wearing a wedding gown sliced open in six places.
Long sections of lace hung from the skirt. The fitted bodice had been cut beneath one arm, exposing the emergency lining Claire’s bridesmaid had pinned into place minutes earlier.
Guests gasped.
Phones rose.
At the altar, Daniel Mercer went pale.
He stared at the ruined gown, then at his mother standing in a silver dress with the beginning of a satisfied smile.
Evelyn had expected Claire to hide.
To cry.
To run out the side door and disappear before the ceremony began.
Instead, Claire continued walking.
Her eyes were red, but her head remained high.
When she reached the altar, Daniel stepped toward her.
“What happened?”
Claire raised one hand.
“Stay there.”
She took the microphone from the officiant.
Evelyn’s smile faded.
Claire looked directly at her.
“You wanted witnesses.”
The screen behind the altar turned on.
Security footage filled it.
Evelyn appeared inside the bridal suite forty minutes earlier. She opened Claire’s garment bag, removed a pair of jeweled scissors and began cutting the wedding gown.
The camera captured her expression clearly.
She smiled after every cut.
Murmurs spread through the chapel.
Daniel turned toward his mother.
“Mom… is that you?”
The screen divided.
Beside the footage appeared financial records.
MERCER FAMILY FOUNDATION — MISSING FUNDS.
FORGED TRUST SIGNATURES.
PRIVATE TRANSFERS — EVELYN MERCER.
The chapel doors opened.
Two police officers entered with Claire’s attorney, Miriam Cole, who carried a tablet and a sealed legal envelope.
“The fraud file is complete,” Miriam announced.
Evelyn reached for Daniel.
He did not move.
She attempted to step away from the altar.
An officer blocked the aisle.
Daniel removed the keys to the Mercer family house from his pocket.
He placed them in Claire’s hand.
Behind them, Evelyn’s recorded smile continued playing on the screen.
Claire held the torn skirt without covering it.
“This wedding is not your stage anymore.”
The officer opened the envelope bearing Evelyn’s name.
But destroying the gown had not been Evelyn’s first attempt to frighten Claire away.

It was the final mistake in a campaign that began when Claire discovered the Mercer Foundation had been stealing from sick children for almost twelve years.
👉 Six months before the wedding, Claire found a donation made in memory of Daniel’s father—and a forged signature proving the dead man was still approving payments.
