Chapter 17 - The Dress Claire Refused to Hide

The designer offered to restore the wedding gown completely.
New lace could replace the damaged sections.
The cuts could disappear.
Claire declined.
“I don’t want it returned to what it was.”
She considered throwing it away.
Then Sophie Alvarez’s mother visited the foundation office.
She saw the sealed garment bag.
“That is the dress?”
“Yes.”
“You walked in wearing it?”
“Yes.”
Mrs. Alvarez touched the plastic covering.
“My daughter watched the video.”
Claire became uncomfortable.
“I wish she hadn’t.”
“She said you looked brave.”
“I felt humiliated.”
“She knows both can happen together.”
The words stayed with Claire.
She brought the dress to the designer again.
This time, she requested visible repair.
Gold thread was stitched along every cut.
The missing lace was replaced with translucent panels patterned like branches.
Nothing concealed where Evelyn’s scissors had passed.
The damage became part of the design without becoming the whole dress.
Claire did not know whether she would wear it again.
The restoration itself was enough.
Daniel continued rebuilding his life separately.
He moved into a modest apartment.
Worked with the foundation’s independent board.
Visited Thomas’s grave.
He no longer used the Mercer estate as his primary home.
The property was sold under court supervision.
Part of the proceeds funded restitution.
Daniel kept only his father’s books, several photographs and an old wooden desk.
One evening, he asked Claire to visit.
The desk stood beside the window.
On it lay the wedding keys he once placed in her hand.
“They no longer open anything,” he said.
Claire picked them up.
“What do you want me to do with them?”
“Nothing. I only wanted you to know I stopped thinking a house was proof I could protect you.”
“What is proof?”
“Listening when you say you need time.”
Claire looked at him.
It had been fourteen months since the chapel.
They had remained engaged in name only.
She asked, “Do you still want to marry me?”
“Yes.”
“Do you need me to?”
Daniel thought before answering.
“No.”

That answer allowed Claire to imagine choosing it again.
👉 Claire no longer feared the wedding itself, but she wanted the next ceremony to contain no donors, trustees or family expectations—only people who had earned a place there.
