Chapter 14 - Claire Took the Stand
Claire wore a navy suit in court.
The repaired locket from her grandmother rested at her throat.
The torn wedding gown lay inside a sealed evidence container.
Evelyn sat beside her attorneys without looking toward Claire.
The prosecutor began with the audit.
Then the intimidation.
The anonymous messages.
The bridal-suite camera.
“Why was a hidden camera installed?” the prosecutor asked.
“To preserve legal files and protect the room after vendors began receiving forged instructions.”
“Did you expect Mrs. Mercer to destroy your dress?”
“No.”
“What did you do after discovering the damage?”
“I walked into the chapel.”
“Why?”
Claire looked toward the jury.
“Because she believed humiliation would remove me more effectively than force.”
“Were you ashamed?”
“Yes.”
“Did you want to run?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t you?”
“Because the shame belonged to the person holding the scissors.”
Evelyn’s attorney stood for cross-examination.
“You used a private wedding to announce criminal accusations.”
“The police entered under a warrant.”
“You controlled the presentation screen.”
“My attorney displayed evidence after Evelyn’s assault was shown.”
“You deliberately exposed Mrs. Mercer before donors.”
“She deliberately cut my dress before those donors.”
The attorney suggested Claire planned the engagement to access Mercer records.
Daniel reacted from the gallery.
Claire remained calm.
“I met Daniel during an independent audit.”
“You knew he was wealthy.”
“Yes.”
“You knew marriage could give you influence.”
“Yes.”
“And you continued.”
“I continued because I loved him.”
“How convenient.”
Claire looked directly at Evelyn’s attorney.
“Love was the least convenient part of this entire case.”
The courtroom became quiet.
The attorney displayed photographs of Claire and Daniel smiling after conflicts with Evelyn.
“You continued attending family events.”
“Yes.”
“You accepted wedding funding.”
“No. Daniel and I repaid every vendor deposit connected to Mercer accounts.”
“You wanted the chapel.”
“I agreed to it.”
“Because trustees would attend?”
“Because Evelyn insisted a private wedding would embarrass her.”
That answer turned the strategy back toward its origin.
Evelyn had selected the public stage.
Claire merely refused to disappear from it.
The hidden-camera footage played.
The jeweled scissors cut through lace.
Evelyn’s recorded voice said:
Let’s see her walk in this.
May you like
Several jurors looked away from her.
👉 Claire’s testimony proved the humiliation was planned, but Daniel’s testimony would decide whether Evelyn could still portray him as a son manipulated by an ambitious bride.
