Chapter 7 - The Night the House Went Dark

Claire stood in the upstairs hallway as emergency lights glowed red along the floor.
The security system announced that the property had entered manual lockdown.
She tried her phone.
No signal.
The house network had been disabled.
“Claire.”
Ethan’s voice rose from the first floor.
Calm.
Controlled.
More frightening than a shout.
She moved toward the bedroom where she had hidden the old car key.
The door opened before she reached it.
Ethan stepped into the hallway holding the audit notice.
“You hired someone to investigate me.”
Claire backed away.
“I investigated my own money.”
“You have no idea what you’ve done.”
“I know exactly what you did.”
He grabbed her wrist.
She twisted free and ran.
Ethan caught her near the stairs and threw her against the wall.
A framed wedding photograph crashed to the floor.
Claire saw their smiling faces beneath broken glass.
“You think Gabriel will save you?” Ethan hissed. “You barely speak to him anymore.”
“He’ll believe me.”
“He’ll believe the medical records. He’ll believe you’re unstable.”
Claire struck the emergency alarm button near the stairs.
Nothing happened.
Ethan laughed.
“I disabled it.”
She ran toward the service staircase.
He followed.
At the bottom, Claire reached the mudroom and pulled the old car key from behind a cabinet.
Ethan seized her hair and dragged her backward.
She screamed.
He covered her mouth.
Then someone pounded on the side door.
“Mrs. Cole?”
It was Rosa.
She had returned for a box of personal belongings Ethan had refused to send.
Ethan released Claire and whispered, “Say one word, and she loses more than her job.”
Claire opened the door only a few inches.
Rosa saw the fear in her eyes.
She also saw Ethan standing behind her.
“I’m sorry,” Claire whispered. “This isn’t a good time.”
Rosa slowly nodded and walked away.

But before reaching her car, she called Gabriel.
👉 Gabriel’s phone rang during surgery, carrying a warning Claire never knew Rosa had sent.
