Chapter 14 - Claire Wakes Up

Claire regained full consciousness the next morning.

Gabriel sat beside her bed holding her hand.

For several seconds, she stared at him as if unsure he was real.

Then she began to cry.

“I’m sorry.”

Gabriel leaned closer.

“You have nothing to apologize for.”

“I pushed you away.”

“He made you afraid.”

“I should’ve told you.”

“You survived long enough to tell me now.”

Claire closed her eyes.

The relief hurt almost as much as her injuries.

Marcus waited until her physician confirmed she was stable before asking questions.

Claire described the abuse, the threats, the forged signatures, and the final attack.

She also gave permission to access the encrypted folder.

The automatic upload contained the hallway video.

Marcus watched only the first minute before turning it off.

His face hardened.

“That’s enough for attempted murder.”

Claire looked toward the door.

“Where is Ethan?”

“In custody.”

“Can he get out?”

“Not easily.”

Maya arrived with additional news.

The federal government had frozen Cole Meridian’s accounts.

The board had suspended Ethan.

Nina had agreed to testify.

Rosa had provided records of injuries she witnessed over two years.

Even the paramedics documented Ethan’s attempt to redirect the ambulance to Voss’s clinic.

The case was stronger than Claire had imagined.

But Maya’s expression remained troubled.

“There’s another issue.”

She opened a file recovered from the private server.

It was a draft petition to declare Claire permanently incompetent.

Attached was a life insurance policy worth seventy-five million dollars.

The beneficiary was Ethan.

The policy had been activated three months earlier using another forged signature.

Gabriel’s grip tightened around the chair.

Claire stared at the document.

“He wasn’t planning to keep me locked away.”

“No,” Marcus said. “He was preparing for you not to survive.”

👉 The assault had not been a moment of rage—it had been the final step of a planned financial murder.
