Chapter 16 - Gabriel’s Sacrifice

The photograph showed Gabriel and Maya at a hospital fundraiser.
Ethan claimed it proved they had conspired to seize Cole Meridian before Claire filed the audit.
The accusation was weak, but damaging enough to trigger an ethics investigation at Gabriel’s hospital.
Reporters surrounded the entrance.
The board temporarily placed Gabriel on administrative leave.
Claire was devastated.
“This is my fault.”
Gabriel shook his head.
“This is Ethan’s fault.”
“You could lose your position.”
“I would lose it ten times before I let you go back to him.”
Gabriel had spent fifteen years building the trauma department.
He was respected across the state.
Still, he refused to pressure Claire into silence.
Instead, he voluntarily submitted his phone, financial records, and emails to investigators.
Maya did the same.
Their records proved the fundraiser meeting had lasted less than three minutes and concerned a pediatric charity grant.
Ethan’s accusation collapsed.
But the ethics board discovered something else.
Months earlier, Gabriel had ignored a suspicious feeling after noticing Claire wearing a scarf indoors and moving carefully because of rib pain.
He had asked whether she was safe.
She had lied.
He had accepted the lie.
At the hearing, Gabriel did not defend himself emotionally.
“I wish I had asked again,” he said. “I wish I had recognized that fear can sound exactly like reassurance.”
The board cleared him of misconduct and reinstated him.
Then Gabriel announced a new hospital protocol requiring private screening for domestic abuse whenever unexplained injuries appeared.
Claire watched the hearing from her recovery room.
For the first time, she understood that her brother did not see her as a burden.
He saw her survival as a reason to protect others.
That afternoon, Marcus arrived with urgent news.
Ethan’s offshore transfer had been traced.
The money had not gone to an anonymous account.

It had gone to Claire’s name again.
👉 Ethan had hidden the stolen fortune inside a final trap designed to make Claire look like the mastermind.
