Chapter 6 - The Voice Behind the Door
“You built none of this,” Ethan said.
His fingers pressed into Claire’s shoulders.
“You had money you didn’t understand. I turned it into something valuable.”
“My parents left that money to me.”
“And without me, it would still be sitting in some useless trust.”
Claire kept her voice steady.
“You forged my signature.”
His hands stopped moving.
The silence confirmed everything.
Then Ethan leaned close to her ear.
“Be very careful.”
“Why?”
“Because accidents happen to frightened women who make reckless choices.”
Claire’s heart hammered, but she continued.
“Like falling down stairs?”
His reflection in the dark office window smiled.
“Exactly.”
The watch recorded every word.
Claire left the office carrying the unsigned documents. In the hallway, she found Ethan’s personal assistant, Nina, standing near the door.
Nina looked terrified.
She had clearly heard part of the conversation.
Ethan appeared behind Claire.
“Nina, go home.”
Nina obeyed.
The next morning, however, Claire received an anonymous message.
I heard him. I’ve seen documents too. Don’t trust anyone in the company.
Claire suspected Nina but did not answer.
A second message followed.
He’s moving money tonight.
Claire forwarded the message to Maya.
Maya checked the accounts and discovered Ethan was attempting to transfer another forty million dollars to offshore entities.
Once completed, the money would become difficult to recover.
“We have to file for an emergency freeze,” Maya said.
“That will alert him.”
“Yes.”
Claire looked at the bruises fading along her arm.
There was no safe option anymore.
She authorized Maya to submit the independent audit request and prepare the freeze order.
Within hours, a confidential notice reached the company’s legal department.
By sunset, Ethan knew.
Claire heard his car enter the driveway.
The front door slammed.
