Three months before the assault, Claire’s brakes had failed on a hill.
She survived only because she steered into a snowbank.
Ethan had blamed the repair shop and bought her a new car.
At the time, Claire believed he was concerned.
Investigators reopened the incident.
The mechanic who serviced the vehicle admitted that a Cole Meridian security contractor had paid him to alter the brake line.
He had been told it was part of an insurance scam.
The contractor then confessed that Ethan ordered the sabotage.
The plan was simple.
Claire would die in a crash.
Ethan would inherit control through the trust’s incapacity and death provisions.
When the crash failed, he moved to the psychiatric strategy.
When the audit threatened everything, he staged the fall.
The full pattern was now undeniable.
At the preliminary hearing, Claire entered the courtroom with Gabriel beside her.
She still walked slowly because of her healing ribs.
Ethan turned when she entered.
For years, one look from him had made her shrink.
This time, she met his eyes.
The prosecutor played the hallway footage.
Then the garage threat.
Then the office recording.
Finally, the court heard Ethan say, “Accidents happen to frightened women.”
No one in the courtroom moved.
The judge denied bail and called Ethan an ongoing danger to Claire and the public.
As officers led him away, Ethan finally lost control.
“That company is mine!”
Claire stood.
“No,” she said. “It never was.”
The courtroom doors closed behind him.
