Ethan closed the tablet and smiled too quickly.
“It’s routine corporate restructuring.”
Claire remained at the kitchen island.
“Why is the account in my name?”
“Tax planning.”
“Why didn’t I know about it?”
His smile vanished.
He walked toward her slowly.
“You don’t understand the business.”
“Then explain it.”
The slap came so fast that her shoulder struck the marble counter.
Ethan stood over her, breathing hard.
“You enjoy this life because I understand the business.”
Claire tasted blood.
For years, she had told herself his anger was separate from his work.
That illusion disappeared that night.
The next morning, Ethan brought flowers.
Claire photographed the bruise behind her ear before applying makeup.
She saved the image in a hidden folder and labeled it with the date.
It was the first piece of evidence.
Over the next several weeks, she quietly began watching him.
She copied account numbers.
She photographed documents left on his desk.
She wrote down every incident, every threat, every unexplained transfer.
Ethan controlled the household internet, the cars, the security system, and most of their shared finances.
So Claire became careful.
She created an encrypted cloud folder under a false name.
She programmed it to send copies to Gabriel if she failed to enter a password for seven consecutive days.
She also contacted an independent forensic accountant named Maya Torres.
Maya had once worked with Gabriel’s hospital foundation and had a reputation for discretion.
When Claire showed her the first documents, Maya frowned.
“These aren’t just suspicious transfers.”
“What are they?”
Maya turned the laptop around.
“They’re structured to make it look as if you authorized them.”
Claire stared at pages carrying digital versions of her signature.
Someone had built a paper trail that placed her at the center of a financial crime.
Then Maya opened the ownership records.
“Claire,” she said quietly, “according to these documents, you don’t merely own a few shares.”
