Chapter 4 - The Inheritance He Stole
Claire had inherited money from her parents, but Gabriel had always told her it was protected in a family trust.
She had never cared about the exact amount.
Her parents had died when she was nineteen. Gabriel, already in medical school, became her guardian and handled everything until she finished college.
When Claire married Ethan, she believed the trust remained untouched.
Maya discovered otherwise.
Three years earlier, Ethan had used a power-of-attorney document to move trust assets into Cole Meridian Group.
The signature appeared to be Claire’s.
It was not.
“He forged it,” Claire whispered.
“Or paid someone to validate a forged electronic authorization,” Maya replied.
The money had rescued Ethan’s company from collapse.
Afterward, he expanded rapidly and publicly claimed that his vision had turned a struggling firm into a billion-dollar enterprise.
In reality, Claire’s inheritance had kept it alive.
Worse, the original trust agreement stated that any company substantially funded by those assets became majority-owned by Claire until repayment.
Ethan had hidden that clause.
“He knows you can remove him,” Maya said.
Claire’s hands went cold.
That explained his fear.
His control.
His obsession with keeping her isolated.
He had not married a wealthy woman and later become abusive.
He had married a woman whose money he intended to steal.
Maya recommended going directly to federal investigators.
Claire hesitated.
Ethan monitored her phone and knew where she went.
If he suspected she had discovered the truth, he would become unpredictable.
“We need evidence strong enough that he can’t talk his way out,” Claire said.
Maya studied her bruised wrist.
“You may not have time.”
Claire knew she was right.
Still, she wanted one more thing before confronting him.
Proof that the abuse and the financial scheme were connected.
She found it three nights later in an email Ethan had forgotten to delete.
The message came from his attorney.
It contained one chilling sentence:

If Claire becomes incapacitated, control transfers temporarily to her spouse.
