Chapter 1 - She Didn’t Fall
“She didn’t fall.”
Dr. Gabriel Bennett’s voice cut through the emergency room like a blade.
Before anyone could move, he crossed the room and drove one hard punch into Ethan Cole’s face.
Ethan stumbled backward into a metal supply cart. Instruments rattled. Two nurses froze. Three police officers at the far end of the unit turned at once.
On the stretcher, Claire Cole lay beneath the white hospital lights with a split lip, one eye swollen purple, and dark bruises circling her wrists, throat, ribs, and thighs.
Ethan clutched his jaw.
“You’re making a mistake.”
Gabriel did not look at him.
He looked at his younger sister.
At the fingerprint-shaped marks on her neck.
At the bruises in different stages of healing.
At the thin line of dried blood near her ear.
Then Claire’s eyelids fluttered.
She struggled to breathe and slowly lifted the hand connected to an IV. Her trembling finger pointed toward a phone and a thick document pouch resting on the instrument table.
“Check my folder,” she whispered.
A nurse unlocked the phone using Claire’s thumb.
An encrypted folder appeared.
Photographs.
Medical notes.
Bank records.
An independent audit request.
Corporate ownership documents.
Ethan’s face lost all color.
Gabriel handed the phone to the nearest officer.
“Lock this unit,” he ordered. “Nobody lets him leave.”
Two hospital guards moved in front of the door.
The officers stepped closer.
As they pulled Ethan’s arms behind his back, Claire watched him without fear for the first time in years.
But when Gabriel opened the next file, he realized his sister had not only documented the violence.
