Chapter 9 - PROTOCOL SEVEN

The ballroom doors opened.
Daniel Ruiz entered with two security officers.
“Ms. Harrington,” he said, “your team is here.”
Connor turned sharply.
“Harrington?”
Evelyn lowered the empty bucket.
Brooke rose slowly from her chair.
Water streamed from her dress onto the polished floor.
Connor stepped toward her.
“What is this?”
One of the officers moved between them.
“Sir, do not approach Ms. Harrington.”
“This is my family’s home.”
Ruiz remained calm.
“And our firm is responsible for the secured financial systems and due-diligence materials on the property tonight.”
Connor pointed toward Brooke.
“She is not part of the Harrington team.”
Ruiz looked at his tablet.
“Brooke Ellis Harrington. Controlling beneficiary representative. Identity verified.”
The room became silent.
Vanessa set down her champagne glass.
Evelyn recovered first.
“A married woman can collect surnames. That does not make her important.”
Brooke wiped water from her eyes.
“No. But your signatures do.”
Connor’s phone began vibrating.
Then Evelyn’s.
Then Vanessa’s.
Around the room, several Ashford executives checked their screens.
Access denied.
Accounts suspended.
Administrative credentials revoked.
A server technician approached Ruiz from the hallway.
“The preservation lock is active. No deletions can be executed.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
It was small.
Barely visible.
But Brooke saw it.
Lawrence appeared on a video call through Brooke’s phone.
“Brooke, are you safe?”
“She was assaulted,” Ruiz answered.
“Local officers are on the way,” Lawrence said. “The records are preserved. The scheduled deletion has been blocked.”
Connor stared at Brooke.
“You knew about the deletion?”
“I knew someone planned to erase foundation records tonight.”
“This is extortion.”
“No,” Brooke said. “This is evidence preservation.”
Evelyn tried to leave the table.
Ruiz did not block her.
“You are free to leave, Mrs. Ashford. However, company devices covered by the preservation order must remain.”
Vanessa clutched her purse.
Brooke noticed the outline of a laptop inside.
“Check her bag,” Connor blurted. “She could be stealing something.”
Vanessa looked at him in disbelief.
Ruiz turned to her.
“Ms. Lane, the device assigned to you is Ashford property. Please place it on the table.”
Vanessa stepped back.
“I don’t have a company device.”
A security camera above the ballroom door rotated toward her.
Ruiz checked his tablet.
“The inventory tracker indicates otherwise.”
Vanessa’s hand tightened around the purse strap.
Then she ran.
