Chapter 17 - THE RECORDING IN THE BALLROOM

Connor’s recorded voice came through the boardroom speakers.

If Brooke loses control in front of the guests, we can challenge anything she says later.

Vanessa asked how they would provoke her.

Connor replied:

Mention the baby. My mother knows what to do.

Evelyn’s voice followed.

She has always been too proud. We break that, and she signs.

No one in the room moved.

Connor stared at Brooke.

“That was taken out of context.”

Lawrence stopped the recording.

“Would you like us to play the full forty-seven minutes?”

Connor had no answer.

The investigators separated Evelyn and Connor.

Vanessa had already been taken into custody after attempting to delete evidence from a remote account.

The charges included conspiracy, wire fraud, forgery, obstruction, and theft from employee benefit funds.

Evelyn was also cited for assault over the bucket incident.

As officers approached Connor, he looked at Brooke.

For the first time since she had known him, he appeared small.

Not because he had lost money.

Because no one was obeying him.

“Brooke, please.”

She remained seated.

“You told them I had nowhere else to go.”

“I was angry.”

“You said it before the gala.”

“My mother was pressuring me.”

“You put the confession in front of me.”

“Vanessa created it.”

“You threatened our daughter.”

“I was never going to abandon her.”

Brooke’s voice remained quiet.

“You already did.”

Connor’s face twisted.

“You loved me.”

“Yes,” Brooke said. “That is why this hurt.”

He seemed to mistake the admission for an opening.

“We can fix this.”

“No.”

The answer was not angry.

It was final.

Connor was escorted from the boardroom.

Evelyn resisted until she saw cameras gathering outside the building.

Then she lowered her head, trying to hide her face.

Brooke watched through the window as mother and son were placed into separate vehicles.

Lawrence stood beside her.

“Are you all right?”

Brooke placed a hand over her stomach.

Her daughter moved beneath her palm.

“I will be.”

The board released the full findings that afternoon.

Brooke’s name was formally cleared.

The company acknowledged that her signature had been forged.

Employees received written confirmation that their retirement accounts would be restored.

The maternity clinics were promised every dollar that had been diverted.

Public opinion shifted completely.

But Brooke refused interview offers.

She had not fought to become famous.

She had fought because Connor’s family believed poverty, pregnancy, and humiliation would keep her silent.

Now the truth was public.

Still, one matter remained unresolved.

Connor had filed a petition seeking joint custody of the unborn baby.

His attorneys argued that financial accusations should not interfere with his parental rights.

Brooke knew the criminal case would not automatically protect her daughter.

She would have to face him once more.

This time, in family court.
