Chapter 2 - THE MARRIAGE THAT CRACKED

Eight weeks before the ballroom incident, Brooke had been standing barefoot in the kitchen when Connor told her their marriage was over.

She was ten weeks pregnant.

A sonogram photograph rested beside the sink.

Connor did not look at it.

He loosened his tie and placed a folder on the counter.

“I’ve already spoken to an attorney.”

Brooke stared at him.

“An attorney?”

Connor sighed as though she were inconveniencing him.

“Don’t make this harder than it has to be.”

Only then did Brooke notice the faint trace of red lipstick on his collar.

“Is there someone else?”

Connor said nothing.

His silence was the answer.

Brooke gripped the edge of the counter.

“Does she know I’m pregnant?”

“She knows everything.”

The cruelty of his response took her breath away.

Connor had once promised that he would never become like his father, a man who treated marriage like a business arrangement.

But over the past year, Connor had changed.

He stayed out late.

He mocked Brooke’s modest clothes.

He stopped asking about her work with the Ashford Family Foundation.

Whenever Brooke suggested that certain grant payments looked suspicious, Connor accused her of being ungrateful.

Now he pushed the folder toward her.

The papers offered Brooke a small apartment allowance for six months.

In return, she would leave the Ashford residence, surrender any claim against Connor’s future income, and agree not to discuss the marriage publicly.

There was another clause.

Brooke read it twice.

“You want me to state that the baby may not be yours?”

Connor finally looked uncomfortable.

“My mother’s attorneys added that.”

“But you know this baby is yours.”

“It protects the family.”

Brooke closed the folder.

“No.”

Connor’s expression hardened.

“You came into this family with nothing.”

“I came into this marriage loving you.”

“That doesn’t pay for anything.”

The front door opened.

Evelyn entered without knocking, followed by Vanessa.

Vanessa wore Connor’s favorite gray coat.

Brooke recognized it because she had bought it for him.

Evelyn glanced at Brooke’s stomach and then at the unsigned agreement.

“You should take the offer,” she said. “A woman in your position cannot afford pride.”

Brooke looked at Connor one last time.

He stood beside Vanessa.

Not beside his wife.

That was the moment Brooke understood that her marriage had not suddenly ended.

It had been quietly dismantled while she was still trying to save it.

She packed one suitcase that night.

Before leaving, she took the sonogram photograph from the kitchen.

Connor kept everything else.

The house.

The cars.

The social connections.

The reputation.

He thought Brooke had walked away with nothing.

He did not know that a registered letter was waiting at her new apartment.
