Chapter 1 - THE BUCKET

The dirty water hit Brooke before she had time to close her eyes.

It poured over her hair, ran down her face, and soaked the champagne-colored satin stretched across her pregnant belly.

The ballroom erupted in laughter.

Crystal chandeliers glowed above tables covered in white linen. Politicians, investors, and wealthy friends of the Ashford family watched as Brooke sat frozen in her chair, one hand protecting her stomach.

Evelyn Ashford held the empty metal bucket over her.

Her former mother-in-law laughed loudly.

“At least you finally took a bath.”

Connor stood beside his mother in a navy suit. Brooke’s former husband did not defend her.

He laughed with everyone else.

Vanessa Lane, the woman Connor had left Brooke for, raised a champagne glass to her lips.

“Someone get her an old towel,” Vanessa said. “Not one of the good ones.”

More laughter followed.

Brooke’s wet hair clung to her cheeks. The water smelled like floor cleaner and stale wine.

Then her baby kicked hard.

Brooke pressed her palm against her belly.

She did not cry.

She slowly lifted her eyes and looked directly at Connor.

His smile weakened.

There was something different in her expression.

Not fear.

Not humiliation.

Decision.

Under the table, Brooke reached into her purse and removed her phone. Water dripped from her fingers as she opened a contact marked:

Lawrence Grant — EVP Legal

She typed three words.

Activate Protocol Seven.

Connor noticed the light from her screen.

“What are you doing?”

Brooke pressed the call button.

“Execute Protocol Seven.”

The laughter around them slowly died.

In the hallway, Security Chief Daniel Ruiz received the order through his earpiece. He looked down at his tablet.

Brooke’s full corporate profile appeared.

His posture immediately changed.

“Use her legal name,” he ordered.

The ballroom doors opened behind Connor.

Two security officers entered and stood at attention.

They did not look at Evelyn.

They did not look at Connor.

They looked directly at the soaked pregnant woman sitting at the table.

“Ms. Harrington,” Ruiz said, “your team is here.”

Evelyn lowered the bucket.

Connor’s face turned white.

Because Harrington was not simply a name.

It was the name printed on the confidential financing agreement that could determine whether the Ashford empire survived another month.

And somehow, the woman they had just humiliated was connected to it.
