Chapter 11 - THE BABY’S WARNING

The fetal heartbeat returned on the hospital monitor.

Strong.

Fast.

Brooke covered her face and cried for the first time that night.

Leah stood beside the bed.

“The baby is okay.”

Brooke lowered her hands.

“Are you sure?”

“You experienced stress-induced contractions. Your cervix is still closed. We’re monitoring both of you.”

Brooke looked at the darkened window.

She had believed she could walk into the Ashford gala prepared for anything.

She had been wrong.

No legal strategy could prepare a mother for the silence between placing a monitor on her stomach and hearing her child’s heartbeat.

Lawrence arrived shortly after midnight.

He waited until Leah confirmed Brooke was stable.

“The server deletion was stopped,” he said. “The forensic copies are secure.”

“And Vanessa’s laptop?”

“Police retained it because she attempted to remove company property during an active preservation order.”

“Was Connor involved?”

“We do not know yet.”

Brooke stared at the monitor.

Lawrence hesitated.

“There’s something else.”

Connor’s public-relations team had released a statement.

It described Brooke as a disgruntled former spouse who had disrupted a private charity event after demanding money.

The statement claimed she had used a “recently obtained family connection” to intimidate innocent guests.

There was no mention of the bucket.

No mention of the forged confession.

Vanessa posted a photograph of herself crying.

She wrote that she had been physically threatened by Brooke’s security team.

By morning, several gossip sites repeated the Ashford version.

Then Connor arrived at the hospital with two photographers waiting outside.

He carried flowers.

Brooke knew immediately what he wanted.

A photograph beside her bed.

Proof that he was a concerned father.

She told the nurse not to let him enter.

Connor called from the hallway.

“Brooke, don’t do this.”

She answered through the closed door.

“You brought cameras.”

“I’m trying to control the damage.”

“To your reputation.”

“To our family.”

Brooke almost laughed.

“We stopped being your family when you made our baby conditional on a confession.”

Connor lowered his voice.

“Vanessa handled the documents. I didn’t read every page.”

“You put them in front of me.”

“My mother said it was necessary.”

“You stood there while she poured filth over your pregnant child.”

Silence followed.

Then Connor said the words that ended the last piece of hope Brooke had held for him.

“You always know how to make yourself the victim.”

Brooke ended the call.

She looked at Lawrence.

“No more private settlements.”

“What do you want to do?”

“Release nothing that could damage the investigation. But preserve everything.”

Lawrence nodded.

Brooke touched her stomach.

“And find out who forged my name.”

That afternoon, a message arrived from an unknown number.

My name is Maria Santos. I worked in Ashford accounting. Vanessa used your login. Connor knew. I can prove it.
