Chapter 7 - THE INVITATION

The Ashford estate looked exactly as Brooke remembered it.

Perfect from a distance.

Cold once you stepped inside.

Valets opened car doors beneath a stone archway. Music drifted from the ballroom. Cameras flashed as wealthy guests entered beneath banners celebrating the Ashford Family Foundation.

Brooke arrived alone.

She wore a simple champagne satin dress that curved gently over her pregnant belly.

For a moment, the entrance fell quiet.

Then whispers followed her across the floor.

Connor stood near the grand staircase with Vanessa on his arm.

Vanessa wore a silver gown and the diamond earrings Connor had once promised Brooke for their fifth anniversary.

They had not reached five years.

Connor’s eyes moved over Brooke’s dress.

“I’m surprised you came.”

“You invited me.”

“My mother invited you.”

Vanessa smiled.

“We thought it was important for everyone to see there are no hard feelings.”

Brooke looked at their joined hands.

“Of course.”

Evelyn approached wearing a black sequined gown.

Her smile did not reach her eyes.

“You’re showing more than I expected.”

Brooke placed a protective hand over her stomach.

“I’m twenty-two weeks.”

“I meant the dress.”

Vanessa laughed.

Brooke said nothing.

Her assigned seat was at the far end of the family table, beside a service door.

There was no name card.

A folding chair had been added after the others were arranged.

Guests discussed investments and vacation homes while Brooke was ignored.

A waiter accidentally spilled red wine near Evelyn’s chair.

Evelyn snapped at a young server named Mia and ordered her to bring cleaning water.

Brooke noticed Mia return with a metal bucket.

She also noticed Evelyn whisper something to Vanessa.

Across the ballroom, Daniel Ruiz stood near the doors.

Their eyes met briefly.

He gave no visible signal.

At nine-thirty, Connor tapped his glass.

He announced that Ashford Development was entering “the strongest financial chapter in its history.”

The refinancing partnership, he said, would preserve the Ashford legacy for another generation.

Applause filled the room.

Brooke knew the truth.

There would be no refinancing unless Harrington Capital approved it.

Connor raised his glass toward his mother.

“To family loyalty.”

Evelyn turned toward Brooke.

“Yes,” she said. “Let’s discuss loyalty.”

An attorney approached carrying a leather folder.

He placed it directly in front of Brooke.

Connor leaned close enough for only her to hear.

“Sign tonight, and we’ll make sure you and the baby are taken care of.”

Brooke opened the folder.

The first page was not a peace agreement.

It was a confession.

👉 The Ashfords had invited Brooke to a charity gala so they could publicly force her to accept responsibility for the money they had stolen.
