Chapter 16 - THE REAL OWNER
Evelyn laughed once.
It sounded forced.
“You cannot walk into my company and remove me.”
Brooke looked at the documents.
“It stopped being solely your company when you violated the agreement that saved it.”
“My family built Ashford.”
“And your employees kept it standing while you took their pensions.”
Connor looked around the room.
“Do not vote. She is doing this because of the divorce.”
Brooke met his eyes.
“The divorce exposed your character. Your financial records exposed your crimes.”
Lawrence called the motion.
Harrington’s sixty-two percent was enough by itself.
Two independent directors also voted with Brooke.
Evelyn was removed.
A second motion removed Connor as chief executive.
A third suspended every executive connected to the foundation transfers.
Connor stood abruptly.
“I am the father of your child.”
The room went silent.
Brooke’s face did not change.
“That gives you responsibilities,” she said. “It does not give you ownership of me, my daughter, or this company.”
“You cannot cut me out.”
“You cut yourself out when you used her paternity as leverage.”
Evelyn pointed at Brooke.
“You planned this from the moment you married him.”
Brooke almost pitied her.
“You still believe everyone loves the way you do—as a transaction.”
Lawrence presented Brooke’s restructuring proposal.
There would be no asset fire sale.
Employee pensions would be restored using recovered executive bonuses, insurance claims, and Harrington bridge funding.
Foundation programs would resume under independent oversight.
Contractors would be paid.
No innocent employee would lose a job because of the Ashfords’ fraud.
The board approved the plan.
Brooke did not take Evelyn’s former title.
She appointed an interim chair with no connection to either family.
Maria was offered the position of chief compliance officer.
She cried before accepting.
Connor watched the company continue without him.
That wounded him more than losing the vote.
Sirens sounded below the building.
Investigators entered the boardroom with warrants.
Connor looked toward Lawrence.
“What did you do?”
Brooke answered.
“We gave them the original files.”
Evelyn insisted that Vanessa had acted alone.
Then Lawrence connected the boardroom screen to the recovered ballroom recording.
Evelyn’s voice filled the room.
If the audit reaches us, the pregnant girl takes the fall.
Vanessa asked what would happen if Brooke refused.
Then Connor’s voice answered.
She’ll sign when I tell her I won’t recognize the baby. She has nowhere else to go.
Connor closed his eyes.
The recording continued.
And the next section contained something even his attorneys had not heard.
