Maria refused to speak by phone.
She asked to meet in a public library outside the city.
Brooke was still under medical observation, so Lawrence went with a forensic investigator.
Before they left, Brooke received more bad news.
The district attorney’s office had opened a preliminary review into the missing foundation funds.
Brooke was not charged.
But her name appeared on enough authorizations that investigators needed answers.
Connor’s attorneys used that fact immediately.
They told reporters that Brooke had activated Protocol Seven to hide her own misconduct.
For several hours, the story spread.
Pregnant heiress accused of stealing charity money.
The words made Brooke physically ill.
She thought about the maternity clinics whose funding had disappeared.

She had worked as assistant controller for twelve years.
Eight months earlier, Vanessa ordered her to change vendor records connected to the foundation.
Maria refused.
Connor called her into his office.

Maria knew that was false.
When she challenged him, Connor offered her a severance package in exchange for silence.
She declined.
Three days later, she was fired for poor performance.

During a private rehearsal two nights before the gala, Evelyn, Connor, and Vanessa had discussed the confession they planned to force Brooke to sign.
Maria had heard part of the conversation while collecting her final belongings from the accounting office.
Vanessa later ordered the recording server erased.
The midnight deletion command was supposed to remove it.
Protocol Seven had stopped the command eleven minutes before execution.
Lawrence placed the recovered server image in the hands of forensic specialists.
Brooke waited.
That evening, investigators found a damaged video file.
The image was corrupted.
The audio was not.
A woman’s voice could be heard clearly.
It belonged to Evelyn.
