Chapter 15 - THE VOTE THEY NEVER SAW COMING

The Ashford boardroom occupied the top floor of the company’s glass headquarters.
Portraits of Connor’s father and grandfather hung behind Evelyn’s chair.
She sat beneath them as though the building were a throne room.
Connor stood near the windows.
Vanessa was absent.
Her attorneys had advised her not to attend.
Several board members looked exhausted.
The scandal had already damaged the company’s stock agreements, partnerships, and public reputation.
Evelyn opened the meeting.
“We are facing an attempted takeover motivated by a bitter domestic dispute.”
Lawrence sat at the opposite end of the table.
Brooke had not yet entered.
Evelyn continued.
“Brooke Ellis exploited a distant family connection to sabotage this company after my son ended their marriage.”
One board member interrupted.
“She was cleared in the foundation investigation.”
“Because Harrington attorneys intimidated the prosecutor.”
“That is false,” Lawrence said.
Connor struck the table.
“This meeting is about saving the company.”
His plan was simple.
Ashford Development would file for emergency restructuring.
The most profitable properties would be sold to a new investment company led by Connor.
Existing debt, pension obligations, and legal claims would remain with the collapsing corporate shell.
Connor described it as necessary sacrifice.
Maria, seated behind Lawrence as a witness, looked horrified.
“You would erase thousands of retirement accounts,” she said.
Connor barely glanced at her.
“You are a terminated employee.”
“I was fired because I refused to help you steal.”
Evelyn ordered security to remove her.
No one moved.
The boardroom doors opened.
Brooke entered wearing a dark blue maternity dress.
There was no dirty water.
No laughter.
No folding chair near a service door.
Every person at the table stood except Evelyn and Connor.
Evelyn’s mouth tightened.
“This is a board meeting. She has no right to be here.”
Lawrence distributed sealed packets.
“Under Section Twelve of the Harrington rescue agreement, repeated covenant violations have converted outstanding debt into voting equity.”
Connor opened the packet.
His eyes moved rapidly across the first page.
“This cannot be correct.”
“It has been independently reviewed,” Lawrence said.
Evelyn tore through the documents.
“You are a lender.”
“Not anymore.”
Brooke walked to the empty chair at the opposite end of the table.
Evelyn stared at her.
“What percentage?”
Brooke did not answer immediately.
She looked around at the frightened directors.
At Maria.
At the portraits of men whose company had been used as an excuse to hurt everyone beneath the family name.
Then she opened her own packet.
“The Harrington Trust now holds sixty-two percent of voting shares.”
Connor sank into his chair.
Evelyn stopped breathing.
Brooke sat down.
“As controlling shareholder,” she said, “I call for an immediate vote to remove Evelyn Ashford as chairwoman.”
