Chapter 14 - THE FORGED NAME
Brooke left the hospital under strict instructions to rest.
She did not return to her apartment.
Harrington security moved her to a quiet residence where the Ashfords could not reach her.
Forensic specialists worked through the night.
They recovered the files Vanessa had attempted to remove.
Her laptop contained templates of Brooke’s signature.
There were scanned copies of thank-you letters Brooke had written to donors.
Vanessa had isolated the signatures and placed them onto fraudulent approval forms.
Metadata showed the documents were created on Vanessa’s computer.
Emails connected Connor to the shell companies.
One message was especially damaging.
Vanessa had written:
Brooke’s account will carry the approvals. Once the divorce is public, everyone will assume she needed the money.
Connor replied:
Make sure my name stays off the payment chain.
Evelyn’s instructions appeared in a separate message.
Do whatever is necessary. The Harrington lenders cannot see a default before refinancing.
For years, Evelyn had presented herself as the guardian of the Ashford legacy.
In reality, she had been draining the company to preserve her lifestyle.
The district attorney formally cleared Brooke as a suspect.
The announcement was brief.
But to Brooke, it felt like breathing after weeks underwater.
She had been betrayed.
Humiliated.
Accused.
Now her name was clean.
That evening, Brooke sat with Maria and Lawrence at a dining table covered in evidence.
Maria pointed to a series of pension transfers.
“They took money from the employee retirement account.”
“How much?”
“Nearly nine million.”
Brooke stood so quickly that Lawrence reached toward her.
She steadied herself.
Connor had not only stolen from a charity.
He had stolen from drivers, assistants, construction crews, cleaners, and office workers.
People who would never be invited into the Ashford ballroom.
People Evelyn considered invisible.
Brooke made her decision.
“Convert the debt.”
Lawrence looked at her carefully.
“Once we do that, there is no quiet resolution.”
“There should not be one.”
“Evelyn will accuse you of using your inheritance to steal the company.”
“Then we show every document.”
“And Connor?”
Brooke placed a hand over her daughter.
“He made his choice on that recording.”
Lawrence activated the conversion process.
Harrington Capital filed notice that repeated covenant violations had triggered its rights under the rescue agreement.
The exact ownership calculation would be presented at the emergency board meeting.
Evelyn received the notice just before midnight.
She called Brooke seventeen times.
Brooke did not answer.
Connor sent one message.
Whatever you think you own, remember that you are carrying an Ashford.
Brooke read it twice.
Then she deleted it.
Her daughter was not a bargaining chip.
